The Mekong Delta in Vietnam is home to over 20 million people and is a globally important agricultural area. The Mekong Delta is just 0.8 m above sea level on average, placing it in a particularly precarious position, at risk of being overtaken by rising sea levels.
“It’s important to lower the wave energy at the coast, but the challenge is to ensure that sediments brought in from the ocean currents can still deposit along the coast,” says Jonas Bauer, a Ph.D. student at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
