Windsurfing

First day on the water in 1984, I was sold.

Windsurfing has since been my passion. I still remember the first days when the wonders of this sport were revealed.

“I just want to go on and on, and never have to stop”, as the world speed record holder Pascal Maca, said back then.

I usually put my GoPro camera either on the boom, on top of the mast or on my helmet. Here are some of my latest videos.

2024 last session

A little rusty, and the sofa and office chair hours lately are felt in my body. I go out and head towards Sletter islands and take a break at Middle Sletter.

New racing sail 7.8

Four weeks ago, August 2024, while sailing with my 7.8 sail off the southeast coast of Norway one afternoon, my mast broke. I’ve had many fantastic sailing sessions with that sail, but this time I found myself 2-3 kilometers from the beach where I had launched, though relatively close to some nearby islands. The wind was blowing from the southwest, onshore. While breaking a mast isn’t entirely unusual, especially when wave sailing or hitting something, this break was different—it had only happened to me once before, back in the mid-1980s.

When something like this happens, the only option is to quickly abandon the rig and let it go. I felt bad, not about losing the equipment (I have insurance), but about the plastic and carbon that would now be left behind in the ocean. But there is really no other option. With no means to alert anyone, a sunny afternoon in a friendly breeze can quickly turn into a risky situation.

After paddling on my board for an hour and a half, I made it back. The onshore conditions just made it a good workout.

Now, four weeks later, I’m trying out my new 7.8 Severne Mach 5 (2022 model), Enigma carbon boom and Apex carbon mast. The way the sail feels in my hands—the incredible acceleration and speed, the flexibility and maneuverability—isn’t surprising, but I’m still a bit in awe of how the Severne team has managed to pack so much power into this sail.

Winter windsurf

It’s January and I have had a few good cross country skiing tours. Today I figured I would go windsurfing. Not something I do very much in the winter and I recall why. Cold…

Climate change and November heat

Just one week after this video was shot, we had minus 2 degrees and ice skating fields ready. It was a bitter sweet session. November in Oslo should not have 16 degrees celsius.

Make your own wet gloves

In this video you can learn how to make your own wet gloves. Just grab an old wet suit. Easy to make and they work really well.

A warm, sunny day South East of Norway

Tiny island just off Swedish waters

Having a break on this tiny island off the coast of Hvaler, I discovered dozens of bird nests. I was afraid I scared them from taking care of their newborn, but hope I didn’t.

Gale force winds

My favorite conditions: 4,1 sq m. and my Goya 81 liters.

Winter windsurfing

Just above 5 degrees works and it’s not colder than skiing as long as I stay on my board.
